From the Priest

Dear Friends,

At Mass after the priest greets the altar, all make the sign of the cross. The sign indicates the unity of faith and baptism. When we make this sign, we are affirming anew the commitment of our baptism in which we became participants in the very life of God. When our parents and godparents made this sign on our foreheads on the day of our baptism, they welcomed us as new members of the church. When we sign ourselves at the beginning of Mass, we state publicly our commitment to the promises of our baptism and to our membership in the church. We have gathered to be sustained in keeping the promises and to deepen our relationship with Jesus Christ through word and sacrament.

Having greeted the Lord through the kiss of the altar and acknowledged faith through the sign of the cross, the priest signifies the presence of the Lord by means of the greeting. The greeting in the several formularies and the response of the congregation are intended to manifest the mystery of the church gathered together. The formula for the greeting is from an introduction of a Pauline epistle. The Instruction makes it very clear that 'good morning' or another expression should not be added to or replace the greeting. Again, it is important to understand the great care that has been given to every word and gesture of the Mass; all are intended to assist us to experience the presence of Christ.

Announcements

Religious Education

While we are still on a summer schedule, religious education will be upon us soon. I am looking for both teachers and assistants for several grades including the high school. While this is a commitment to both the parish and the students, we will give you all the support and help you will need. This is a wonderful way to both share your faith with our children and learn more about your faith at the same time. If this speaks to you and you would like more information please contact Kathy George at kgeorge2@maine.rr.com or 657-5659.

For Our Deaf Community Members

The Parish Inclusion Ministry of Catholic Charities Maine Family Life Institute would like to make parishioners aware that Interpreters are available at the 8:30 am Sunday Mass at St. Anthony of Padua in Westbrook.

Host Families

Catherine McAuley High School is currently looking for families to host exchange students from Korea for the 2008-2009 academic year. Families will be paid a monthly stipend of $500 and be able to take part in a wonderful ministry. If you are interested in possibly hosting a student or know someone who you think would be, please contact the Admissions Office at 797-3802 ext.2043 or email dsalvaggio@mcauleyhs.org

The DVD’s are here!

Copies of the Confirmation and First Communion DVD’s have arrived. Please stop by the table and pick up your copy today. Those with red dots indicate that payment is due. Please make checks payable in the amount of $15.00 per copy to: Holy Martyrs Church. What a wonderful memento of the celebration of the Sacraments.

Tuition Assistance Policy for Catholic School Students

As families consider the advantages of a Catholic education, a clarification of the policy on financial aid from the parish is offered. Aid will be provided for students who with their families worship at St. Gregory's and volunteer in some way on behalf of the parish; the family must use our budget envelope system. The elementary school students meeting these requirements will be provided tuition assistance in accord with the amount determined by the Catholic school which they attend.

Music Director

Cecile DeRoche-Cain has resigned as music director of Holy Martyrs effective June 30, 2008. We are beginning a search for a new director. Persons interested should contact the parish office

Reminder to parents of 2nd grade Confirmation

Just to let you know that there are a few certificates that were not picked-up at the reception last Saturday, following the celebration of Confirmation and First Communion at the Cathedral. Please check at the back of the church and take your child’s certificate home, today. There is a sign-up
sheet for those requesting a copy of the DVD of the Mass. If you haven’t already made a request, please put your name on the available sheet. Checks in the amount of $15.00 per copy should be made payable to: Holy Martyrs Church. We will notify you when the copies are ready (in about 2 weeks).

Coffee and Donuts

We would appreciate a few parishioners support to set-up/clean-up for coffee and donuts on CCD weekends. This would help support the people on the already established coffee and donuts schedule. It’s only a half hour commitment 15mins. to set-up and 15mins. to pick-up once every three months with a few extra people. (Set-up is before Mass between 10-10:30am and clean-up 11:45-12:00, there will be experienced people to help beginners). Please sign-up on the sheet at the back of church if you’re able to help out. Thank you, Scott & Chris Sutton, Family Life Commission, csutton1@maine.rr.com or 207-632-7692.

Sunshine Committee

If you are aware of someone who might benefit from receiving a sunshine, get-well, or sympathy card, please call Liz Chandler at 926-3692 and give her a name and address. She will take care of the rest. We also welcome the opportunity to recognize a milestone birthday or anniversary or other special event. Notes on the cards are hand-written and signed in the name of the parish family. All cards are Christian cards, and many contain quotes from scripture. A card can mean a great deal for someone who may be feeling forgotten.

Bishop's Weekly Messages

Bishop Malone is now offering a reflection on the Scriptures for each week's Liturgy on the Diocesan Web Site: www.portlanddiocese.net. Each two-to-three minute video is scheduled to appear on the Web site on Thursday before the relevant Sunday. It will remain available through the following Wednesday.

Offertory Envelopes

If you'd like offertory envelopes and do not currently use them, please use the slip at the back of the church to request them or see Rachel Hayes. Those currently using envelopes, boxes for the new year will be distributed in early December. Thank you for your support of the parish as good stewards of your gifts.

Babysitting

We would like to continue to offer babysitting for young children during the Fall of 2007, but we are in need of volunteers. All volunteers must first attend a Protecting God's Children workshop. Babysitting is a great way for students to earn community service hours.

The first day of babysitting is Sunday, September 9th at 10:30 AM.

Potential volunteers and those parents who are in need of this service can feel free to call Heather Maines at 657-4425.

Donations for Food Pantries

Donations for the food pantries in Gray and New Gloucester may be left in the entrance of the church any weekend. There is an on going need every week. Items always needed are personal care items, paper products, water packed tuna, peanut butter, cereal, canned fruit and vegetables, boxed meals, pasta, baby food, and diapers. If we all chip in, we can at least try to eradicate hunger in our small part of the world.

Altar Servers

Any boy or girl interested in becoming an altar server, please contact Cleo Werner at 926-5055.

Bulletin Announcements

The bulletin will be prepared at Holy Martyrs.  The deadline for notes is Tuesday at noon. Notes can be emailed (rectory@holymartyrs.org), mailed to 266 Foreside Road, Falmouth, ME 04105-1792 or given by hand to Father Ford or Deacon Dennis.

Flower Book
The purpose of the flower book is to offer parishioners the opportunity to select altar flowers. The flowers can be from your own garden or purchased. The book contains various weekend dates to sign up for a special meaning for you, i.e. in memory of a loved one, the celebration of an anniversary or simply in thanksgiving. You may take the flowers after Sunday Mass to your home, to a friend or leave them on the altar. If you have any questions please call Sue Trudel at 657-4314.

Funeral Receptions

Some parishioners may or may not know that we offer a reception after the funeral of any St. Gregory parishioner.  There is no charge to the family as the church and a wonderful group of volunteers offset the expenses.  This endeavor is a great help to the families who have lost a beloved family member.  If you would like to be a part of this ministry by calling for baked goods, baking something or assisting at the reception we would appreciate your help, please call Joyce or Scott (892-1262) or Gail (926-3674).  Many Thanks.

The Rosary
Recited every Saturday at 5:30 pm (before the 6:00 pm Mass).  Everyone is invited to join us in honoring the Blessed Mother.
